3 Ways To Teach A Child To Learn

You shouldn’t expect that a child can do it on his own: while a little person studies in the 1st-2nd grade (in the 3rd grade he more or less starts to take responsibility for himself), he is not yet very well organized, just “sane”. Therefore, he needs control from the outside, that is, he needs to be taught how to learn, how to show how to do it. 

Of course, there are children who, because of heightened anxiety, for example, fear of the teacher or parents or, on the contrary, excessive fascination with the teacher (more common among girls), are themselves concerned about doing their homework. But, this is rather an exception to the general rule. So, the responsibility for a child’s ability to learn lies largely with adults! 

Nowadays, there are a lot of expert evaluations that come down to the thesis – a child’s interest is paramount. I agree that it is criminal to push a child’s initiative. But, unfortunately, the excitement of novelty drops even in adults, and the ability to return to focus, whether it’s solving a problem or just learning new information, I think, will remain relevant.

But if, after all, a child knows how to pull himself or herself together and to do, to finish, to learn, then he or she will not fall into despair. So how to keep the child’s attention during the lessons? 

1. Stimulate inner motivation

You can ask your child and encourage him or her to think about what will give him or her this or that skill – the ability to read, write, count, remember. This may become the basis of his own inner motivation – the strongest and brightest stimulus. Alas, it burns brightly, but not very long. It will be necessary to periodically remind the child about the benefits of what he once thought and came to himself. 

2. Change roles – instead of a pupil “teacher”

All lecturers know: if you want to know the subject better, read a lecture on it. We turn a child into a teacher, put in front of him all his bunnies, cars, bears, dolls and play in school. By the way, you can also play the role of the most disobedient and the most “mediocre” student – “Oh, how hard is it to write these numbers! I can’t do it!”. Or you can make a lot of mistakes on purpose. Usually, children are very happy to see themselves from the outside. 

This method relieves stress, allows you to safely talk and realize the difficulty of learning. And this, as you remember, improves self-control and increases “sanity”, that is, the child sees an obstacle (laziness, inattention, inability to force himself to finish), which he has to cope with. 

3. Teach him or her to do the lessons on their own

After a while, when you see that the child has mastered the skill of “doing lessons”, gradually we begin to leave him alone. But you need to make sure that your child understands that failure to do their homework and poor learning in general have negative emotional consequences for them. That is, you need to create a waiting field around him/her, where two topics are necessarily present.

 The first is to let him know that you appreciate his efforts. You can say: “We’re happy when you’re doing well” or “We get upset when you’re doing bad things”. This way the child learns that you respect his work, his efforts on himself, his ability to show will.

The second is to say that if something does not work, it is not a disaster! This will allow the child to avoid unnecessary anxiety about punishment and disappointment in him and will remove the negative emotional connotation from the process of study.
