Australia's Best Sporting Events

Australia is a very sports orientated nation and it shows by just how many events, both local and international, are held around the country. The sporting culture is diverse, with several different events taking place throughout the year.

Formula 1

Australia loves its car racing, with one of the main local events being the Bathurst 1000. However internationally there is no bigger racing event than the Formula 1 Championship, which takes place in many countries all over the world. One such place happens to be in Melbourne, Australia at the Albert Park Lake track which is just south of the Melbourne CBD. The city has a certain atmosphere to it during the event as you can hear the cars for miles around the track. The race hasn’t always been in Melbourne, however. The event first took place in Adelaide, South Australia in 1985 and was held there until 1995, when it moved to Melbourne with the first race happening in March of 1996.

AFL Grand Final

One of the biggest sporting events in Australia, the AFL Grand Final, is the culmination of an entire season’s worth of Australian Rules Football that begins in March. The Grand Final is played in September every year at the MCG in Melbourne. AFL was founded in 1897 when it was known as the Victorian Football League (VFL). It wasn’t until 1990 that it formally became the Australian Football League (AFL) in part to the inclusion of teams from other states over the years. Since 1977 there has been a Grand Final parade that takes place the day before the Grand Final and is attended by around 100,000 people, with a record 150,000 people attending in 2015. The winning club of the Grand Final receives four prizes: The Premiership Cup, the Premiership Flag, the E.L. Wilson Shield and $1,200,000AUD in prize money.

The Melbourne Cup

One of the biggest horse racing events in the world, the Melbourne Cup takes place on the first Tuesday of November every year. This race showcases the best of the best in thoroughbred horses from around the world competing for the prestigious Melbourne Cup. The event takes place at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne and is a 3200-metre turf race. Thousands of people attend the event every year and it has become part of Australian culture, with a big focus on fashion and gourmet food and drinks.

The Melbourne Cup was first run in 1861 and since then has been a staple in the sporting calendar.
