Preparing for CLAT

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) by the Consortium of National Law Universities is conducted every year for admission in NLUs and other law colleges for their undergraduate and postgraduate program.  This year due to the ongoing pandemic, the tests were delayed a couple of times and were conducted on 28th September 2020.

Let us look at the details of the CLAT exam and how you must prepare for it.

Eligibility Criteria

Students obtaining 45% or more in their 12th boards in the general category and 40% minimum for SC/ST and other scheduled castes can appear for the CLAT exam. There is no upper or lower age limit for the examination.

CLAT Exam process

  • Students have to first fill the online application form from the official website. There they have to fill in all details, upload documents and pay the fees.
  • Then the admit cards would be issued two weeks before the examination.
  • The CLAT exam is conducted from 3 Pm to 5 PM at the center allotted.
  • Then results and cut off are announced along with the merit list.
  • The final step for admission is the counselling process.

CLAT 2020 Question paper Pattern

The offline based examination is of 2 hours consisting of 150 marks. There is also a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer. There is an overall and sectional cut off as well. The following subjects come from the Sin CLAT question paper. They are as follows:

  • Logical Reasoning
  • Legal Reasoning
  • Current Affairs including General Knowledge
  • Quantitative Techniques
  • English

CLAT Exam Results and Cut off

The students can view the answer key the same day they appear for the examination. There is one mark for each correct answer and negative 0.25 for the incorrect one. The CLAT 2020 result was declared on 5th October 2020. CLAT Cut off 2020 was declared on the same day as results were announced.  The cut-off is the minimum marks students must score to qualify for the next phase. It is calculated based upon the number of seats and difficulty level of the examination.

Preparation for CLAT

  • While you decided to take the examination, you must understand certain things and start preparing for the exam accordingly.
  • First and foremost, understand the syllabus and exam pattern and make a study plan accordingly. This will help you in systematically studying all the aspects of the examination.
  • Make sure to cover the full syllabus. Skipping on any topic is not advisable. The CLAT question paper can have any questions from any topic.
  • Ensure giving as many mock tests as you can after the course is finished. This will make you understand your weak areas and help to improve them.
  • Make study notes for revision, and if any doubts, discuss it with your subject teacher and friends. Group study can be great as it would make you remember things easier.
  • Always go through previous years’ question papers, Results, and Cut off. This way you could get an idea about the pattern, questions asked, and CLAT cut off 2020. You can prepare accordingly.
  • Always remain positive and think positive. Put negative things at the back of the seat and be confident.
