Why Do People Not Reach Out For Help With Their Mental Health?

There are a number of reasons why someone wouldn’t reach out for help with their mental health. The problem is that there are too many people who feel this way. They feel like they shouldn’t need help with their mental health. They feel as though they should be able to deal with it themselves, which in itself is an issue.

Understanding why people do not reach out for help with their mental health is one of the best ways to try and convince people to seek out help, because pretty much every reason has a counter argument that encourages people to seek out help instead. So, in this article, we’re going to be discussing some of the reasons why people do not reach out for help with their mental health, so keep reading if you would like to find out more.

Embarrassment Or Shame

The first reason is embarrassment or shame. This is one of the most common ones as people believe that others are going to judge them if they were to find out that they are seeking help for mental health. Therapy is still a hot topic that people shy away from, even though it’s talked about so much these days. Did you know that more people than ever are currently undergoing therapy treatment in some capacity? Even though it has become more normalized, there are still a lot of people out there who fear the stigma that still surrounds this type of healthcare.

But, the thing is, you wouldn’t feel ashamed if you were to go to the doctor for a physical issue, would you? No. You wouldn’t feel embarrassed if you had to be carried into a hospital because you broke your leg, would you? These are the things that you need to think about when you’re battling shame and embarrassment surrounding mental health. Just because you cannot look inside the brain and see the injury there all of the time, doesn’t mean that it isn’t very real.

The Rising Cost

Another issue that people are facing are the rising costs associated with living. Therapy has never been cheap, but there have been times where it has been far more affordable than it is currently. There are so many people out there who would be willing to take the step to get help with their mental health, but feel as though they can’t because the extra financial strain is just not something that they can handle.

While we understand this, and we know that there might not be an easy work around for a lot of people, there are some practices that offer insurance coverage as an accepted form of payment. It’s true that this is not the case for all practices, so you would need to do your research and look into the options available to you. For example, it might be worth looking at the in-network Aetna therapists at Manhattan Mental Health Counseling, or something similar to this where you live.

Family Pressures

Did you know that one of the reasons people don’t seek out help is because they worry that their family is going to have something negative to say about this? Despite the fact that family pressure may well be a reason that help is needed in the first place, they still won’t do it because they don’t want their family to either turn their back on them, or tease them, or something similar.

Now, if you do not come from a family that thinks like this then this might seem like a foreign concept to you, but people do face these issues regularly. Sometimes, families might not believe that the person has a mental health issue that needs help. Sometimes, they might feel as though issues should be dealt with inside the family and in no other way.

It’s a lot for anyone to handle, but if you’re experiencing this right now, you need to understand that this is a form of control that they should not have on you. Your health is your own, and you can make decisions about it.

They Don’t Feel They Need Help

A lot of the time, people don’t reach out for help with their mental health because they feel as though they should not need it. They feel as though they should simply get on with it, manage it themselves, and that their mental health concerns are not ‘big enough’ to warrant getting help. This is something that we hear a lot, but it’s a pattern of thinking that we need to work to eradicate because it’s not right.

If you are struggling with your mental health, and you are struggling with your daily life, or you have days where you are so low you can’t get out of bed, or panic attacks, or anything like this, you should seek out help. Even if it only happens every now and then, you don’t want to let the issue fester and get worse.

Lack Of Time

Finally, some people will cite lack of time as a reason that they have not reached out for help with their mental health. If you have a busy job and you’re finding that it’s hard to fit this into your life, then you need to do some rearranging. Your mental health, and your health overall is more important than anything else. If you need help, then you need to make time to get it. You deserve to make time to get it.

Everything around you is going to struggle while you’re struggling anyway, so getting back to the best version of yourself is in everyone’s best interests.

Hopefully, you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the common reasons why people do not reach out for help with their mental health. Each one of these reasons has its counter, and it’s important that if you are feeling like you need help with your mental health, or the signs suggest you do, you get the help that you need.
