Your Trip Planning Guide: Different Types Of RVs And How To Choose Between Them

The RV industry contributes a staggering $114 billion to the country’s economy every year, with about $18 billion in sales. Owning an RV is one of life’s greatest joys, and it’s no wonder they’re so popular in the country. Not only are they fun to travel with, but they are also super comfortable, and can serve as your second or only home.

While owning an RV is a dream come true for most folks, buying an RV is the tricky bit. With so many different types of RVs, it can be a tad difficult to pin down the right one for you. If this sounds like your predicament, we’re here to help.

In today’s post, we’ll be breaking down the different types of RVs so you can buy the right one for your needs.

Motorcoaches

Motorcoaches are a great example of luxury RVs and are packed with tons of features and amenities, and they also have the most space. These RVs are basically houses on wheels, with many slide-outs to allow for even more space. If you do your digging, you might even find one with a secondary loft.

Class C coaches and Class B vans are a lot smaller but still great to own. The smaller models have wet baths, which combine both the shower and toilet. They’re, however, more affordable and easier to drive.

If you’re shopping for a motorhome, you might want to take extra RV driving lessons to improve your driving. However, this doesn’t mean that you’ll have to get a separate RV driving license to drive a large RV.

Travel Trailers

Travel trailers are among the most popular RVs in the country. They come in different shapes and sizes, from the small teardrop models to the large 40-foot five-wheelers. These trailers measure about 10 to 11 feet tall, but five-wheelers may be over 13 feet tall.

There are special RV campsites for these trailers where RV owners can set up camp. After parking the trailer at the campsite, you can unhook the tow vehicle and use it for your daily activities.

Large Travel Trailers

Large travel trailers measure about 25 to 30 feet in length, and you can think of them as double axle trailers with a home on top. They’re large enough to accommodate a separate shower, fridge, and a full-sized bed.

They also have outdoor awnings, with most models having a 12-volt propane mechanism for powering the lights, fridge, and water heater.

Tear Drop Trailers

Tera drop trailers are the smallest of trailer RVs, with most being under 10 feet. They can accommodate a single traveler, with one bed and some storage space. You can tell these trailers by their characteristic curved roofs.

Outside, you’ll find a lid that you lift to reveal the kitchen. As you’d expect, these RVs don’t have onboard water, and neither do they have bathrooms. They’re great for solo escapades into the great outdoors.
