4 Tips To Stay Healthy and Fit on Your Next Vacation

Even though vacations should include relaxation for the mind, body and soul, you need to make sure you don’t let a peaceful getaway cause you to forget about staying healthy and fit. A week of poor eating habits and lack of exercise probably won’t have lasting effects, but they may move the scale in a direction you won’t be happy to see.

Fortunately, there are plenty of things you can do to prioritize fitness when you’re on vacation. Keep the following four tips in mind when it’s time to plan your next trip.

1. Pack Comfortable Clothes

No matter where you travel, you’ll have plenty of walking to do to get from one place to another, even if it’s just from your car to a table in a restaurant. Make sure you take appropriate clothing to fit whatever your plans are; otherwise, you’ll be uncomfortable and may even cancel these activities, which will cut down on the amount of physical activity you get on vacation. Plus, having shorts, yoga pants and baggy T-shirts will encourage you to get out and exercise.

It’s also essential to pack comfortable shoes. You won’t want to walk anywhere if you don’t have the right kicks. Imagine trying to navigate the ship on your dream Western Caribbean cruise with tight dress shoes on. One hour of walking will leave you with sore feet and the desire to lounge. Not only will you fail to benefit from burning some extra calories, but you’ll also miss out on cruise-ship sightseeing!

2. Book a Hotel With a Gym

If you’re used to going to the gym at home, find a hotel that offers a fitness center. Hit up this workout area in the morning so you’ll have the rest of the day to sightsee and explore. Exercising early may also help you keep a wellness mindset for the rest of the day, allowing you to make healthier food choices.

Don’t fret if you can’t find a hotel that offers this amenity. Instead, look up fitness centers or events in the area. For example, perhaps a local group meets a few days each week for yoga. Don’t be afraid to inquire about exercise classes, even if you’ve never done the specific workout they’re offering. You’ll have the chance to meet new people in a different area and may end up liking the exercise.

3. Choose Healthy Meals

You may want to splurge a little when it comes to unhealthy food, which is fine. After all, you’ll be on vacation, so you need to live it up. However, you should try to limit how much you indulge. If you plan on going out to eat, look for restaurants with healthy options, as there are plenty of delicious dishes that will maintain your waistline.

One way to ensure you won’t make unhealthy eating a habit is by buying your own groceries. Most hotels have refrigerators and microwaves, so you’ll be able to store your items. Some places even have stoves, which will allow you to cook your own gourmet meals.

4. Stick With Water

Becoming dehydrated can have a lot of adverse effects on your body. Some symptoms include headaches, dizziness, fatigue and confusion. Oddly enough, another sign is hunger. Your body may mistake needing water for being hungry, which may cause you to overeat.

To avoid this issue, you should drink water consistently throughout the day. Keep a refillable bottle with you and add water as needed.

If you’re not sure whether you’re dehydrated, check the color of your urine. A dark yellow or amber color indicates that you need to rehydrate your body. Also, if you notice that you’re not urinating as often as usual, you may want to add some water to your diet.

Fitness probably isn’t at the top of your list when you go on vacation. However, think about how you’ll feel when you return from your trip if you didn’t take care of your body while on vacation. You’ll likely be bloated and lethargic and may need to recover from the getaway. Instead, try to keep your trip as relaxing as possible with a focus on fitness so you’ll come home feeling refreshed.
