Startup Help Top 5 Tips For Hiring Coders

Small business is booming. Approximately 627,000 new businesses start up every year.

With those new beginnings, many startups find themselves in need of programmers. Programmers can help you develop your web and mobile apps, enhance your website design, and even simplify your e-commerce.

However, hiring coders can be difficult. It’s a crowded market full of specialized skill sets, and you may lack the technical jargon to convey your needs. If you are looking into hiring coders, we’ve got you covered.

We’ve put together an article full of tips on hiring programmers. Read on to learn more!

1. Do Your Research

Before you can begin hiring coders, you need to have a firm grasp of what you need them to program.

You need to know your target audience, first and foremost. You must also have a clear vision of your business plan, and who your competition is on the market.

Knowing these things is part of being a startup owner. It will also make hiring a programmer much easier, as you can communicate your needs more effectively.

2. Have A Design Ethos

Your branding and marketing design plays directly into how your user experience and user interface are programmed. Don’t go into the hiring process without a clear design goal.

It will save you a lot of time and money in the long run to develop a design brief for your project. This can be given to prospective freelance coders or used for your in-house coding team.

3. Know Your Languages

Along with knowing your target audience and your competition, you should also have a general idea of the platform that you will be developing your product for.

Apple, Windows, and mobile platforms all work best with different coding languages. For example, Android uses mainly Java, while iOS uses Swift.

Many coders specialize in one or two coding languages. Knowing which language you need to code in will make your hiring process much easier.

4. Write A Feature List

Along with a design brief and a platform and coding language, you should be able to tell prospective hires the features that you want in your product.

While not every programmer will be a specialist in each feature, you can get a better sense of what kind of team you need to hire by preparing your feature list beforehand.

5. Hiring Coders: Where To Find Them

There are three main avenues of hiring coders.

  • Freelancers: Sites such as Upwork and Fiverr allow you to shop a marketplace of freelance coders offering their services. This can be cost-effective, but accountability and final products are hit and miss.
  • Outsourcing: Outsourcing your coding to companies in other countries can be extremely cost-effective and not impact the quality of your product. However, communication can be difficult at times.
  • In-house team: If you have the overhead and resources, this is the best option. You can minimize communication issues and oversee every step of the process.

Whichever you choose, be sure to thoroughly vet the programmers you hire. Ask for examples of previous work and consider having someone on the hiring team who understands programming.
