Fear of Driving - Is This You?

Those who suffer from driving anxiety (fear of driving), look for ways to avoid driving even when it comes to simple trips like going to the store. This is because getting behind the wheel can make such a driver feel anxious. The symptoms of this type of anxiety are very similar to the symptoms of anxiety attacks.

People with extreme fear of driving may not go on vacations, drive to work, or take job promotions that may make them drive. Some may see no need of getting a driving license and may stay without a driving license for many years. The symptoms of driving phobia include sweating, trembling, thoughts of losing control or feeling out of reality, and heart palpitations.

A person may also feel anxious or have scary thoughts while driving in situations such as interstates or heavy traffic and heavy traffic and may not be comfortable driving in such situations. If a person has any of these signs and symptoms, then it is highly likely that he or she suffers from driving anxiety.

There are different causes of driving anxiety. Some people may develop driving fears after being involved in an accident or any other bad driving experience. This fear develops when the brain senses danger lurking nearby based on past driving experiences. Due to the flight or fight reaction that contributes to the activation of fears in most situations where dangers are perceived, most of the fears and phobias are a subconscious reaction to possible dangers blown out of proportion.

This is why most of the therapies often encourage exposure to help a person overcome overactive fears and phobias. At times, the dangers and fears are real but in reality, the chance of something bad happening is slim. This also applies to the fear of driving. Even though a fatal crash can occur, the chance of it happening is not in proportion to the inconvenience and anxiety the fear of the crash generates.

If you have a driving phobia, consider changing the conditioned response and the emotional impact the phobia has on you. Many people believe that the only way to treat this phobia is to reach through the conscious mind as the phobia is triggered in the subconscious mind. Some people claim that hypnotism can be used to treat all phobias including driving phobia.

Reconditioning the response of the subconscious mind can make a person confident and calm as it gets rid of fear and anxiety. If you suffer from any form of phobia, it is good to consider psychological techniques and practices to help you overcome the phobia. These techniques and practices are very effective and can help you just as they have helped others. Therapy such as neuro-linguistic programming, cognitive behavioural therapy, and meditation can help you overcome a phobia.

Note that there are those who are cured more easily than others. Some people have a specific fear of driving e.g. driving over narrow bridges, heavy stop and go traffic, or remote country roads. This is acceptable and works fine in cases where the person does not have extreme fear or does not deal with these situations regularly.

Driving panic can happen to anybody in some situations. It is a good idea for those with a debilitating fear of driving to overcome it. They may need specialization and focus to overcome this fear. Many people have found information about training the mind to stop being afraid and have used step by step processes to help them overcome the fear of driving. The processes have been proven effective and can be done without prescription medicines or a therapist.

These programs are available on the internet and can help you overcome your fears by working on mind control. One of the best things about these programs is that they are easy to follow. People have tried self-help therapy like yoga and aromatherapy to help them overcome their fears. Usually, it depends on the person and the severity of the anxiety. One of the most effective programs is a certain program that takes 15 minutes and gives you 4 easy to follow steps that show you how to take control of your mind.

Knowing how panic and anxiety work will help you choose a good technique to overcome your driving anxiety. A creative person with an active mind tends to have phobias since they have an over-active imagination. This also applies to highly intelligent people as there are logical reasons involved with their fears.

If you put these in perspective, you will be able to learn the easy steps to get rid of your fear of driving and any other phobias and start enjoying life again. Always remember that the most important things when it comes to overcoming phobias are: proper knowledge and the right techniques.
