Is AMD Ryzen 5 Actually Better Than Intel Core i5?

Choosing the right processor for your computer is a tough decision. You need to know how well and how fast it can run multiple applications and processes. It is one of the key components that would decide how much your computer can handle without slowing down.

Today, we have two processors for you to choose from. We will compare the Intel i5 and AMD Ryzen 5 side by side. Which of these two will reign supreme and be worthy of your selection?

Read on and see which one between the AMD Ryzen 5 vs i5 from Intel is for you.

Comparing the Features

To start the comparison between the AMD Ryzen 5 vs i5, we first look at their features.

AMD Ryzen 5, especially the 3600, carries the same attributes present in the 3000-series. This includes the Zen 2 microarchitecture inherent in this line of AMD processors. It also combines its six-core, 12-thread configuration with a 32MB L3 cache.

This also has a 3.8 GHz base clock, as well as a 4.4 GHz single-core boost clock. Although like other Zen 2 chips, Ryzen 5 does not come with integrated graphics. This would mean that you need to get a dedicated graphics card for it.

Meanwhile, the Core i5 (in this case, the 9600K for comparison) has the Coffee Lake microarchitecture. It also has six cores, but it does not have Hyper-Threading. This limits the chip to six threads.

As for the cache, the i5 processor comes with a 9MB L3 cache. Meanwhile, it comes with a 3.7 GHz base clock and a 4.6 GHz single-core boost clock. It also has the UCHD Graphics 630 iGPU.

For this, the AMD stands out with its generous features, with the absence of an iGPU being its only weakness. It shows how far AMD has gone ever since Ryzen 5 1500X and 1400 during their release.

Gaming Performance

The expected outcome for this aspect would be the Intel Core i5 to be at the top in this comparison. When you put the Core i5-9600K side by side with the Ryzen 5 3600, though, it becomes a close fight when it comes to which stands supreme.

By a narrow margin, the Ryzen 5 wins in this comparison. Ryzen 5 3600 has more capability when conducting multi-threaded workloads. While Intel takes advantage of its single-threaded configuration, it was not enough to offset the better performance balance that AMD has through the Ryzen 5.

Cooling Solutions

Both the Ryzen 5 and the Core i5 use a 95W TDP. If we talk about the power consumption, the Intel Core i5 tends to draw more power than the AMD Ryzen 5. Due to this, AMD stands out better with the Wraith Spire CPU cooler, allowing for better cooling for the processor.
